Certification overview
- Approvals depend on what the product is and does. Wireless functions, product category and intended users decide which apply.
- Typical items to check: WPC Equipment Type Approval (ETA) for wireless in delicensed bands, BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) if your category is listed, TEC MTCTE for covered telecom equipment, and EMC testing.
- Rules change. Treat this page as an orientation and confirm current requirements with the authority or an accredited laboratory.
- Start early. Test lab queues and rework can add weeks, so design decisions such as pre-certified modules should consider certification from day one.
Approvals you may need to check
| Approval | Applies to | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| WPC ETA | Devices using delicensed radio bands (such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 865-867 MHz LoRa) | Granted through the Government's Saral Sanchar portal; confirm current process and fees |
| BIS CRS | Products in categories on the Compulsory Registration Scheme list | Requires testing at a BIS-recognised lab; check whether your category is listed |
| TEC MTCTE | Certain telecom and networking equipment | Mandatory testing phases cover specific equipment categories; confirm if yours is included |
| EMC testing | Most electronic products | Emission and immunity tests, e.g. against CISPR 32 / IEC 61000-4 series |
| Safety (electrical) | Mains-powered or battery products | Depends on category and standard |
| Sector rules | Medical devices (CDSCO), vehicles (AIS), others | See sector pages such as medical firmware |
Design choices that ease certification
- Use pre-certified radio modules and keep the antenna and layout as the module vendor specifies.
- Design for EMC from the stack-up, with proper filtering, grounding and ESD protection.
- Run a pre-compliance scan early with near-field probes and a spectrum analyser to find large emitters.
- Keep radio configuration locked to permitted bands, such as IN865 for LoRaWAN.
- Document the design and keep a controlled bill of materials, because certified products must match what was tested.
Planning timeline
Work backwards from your launch date: finalise hardware, schedule the lab, allow time for one retest, then apply. Changing a radio, antenna or major component after approval may require re-evaluation. Our PCB design and prototyping pages explain how EMC risk is reduced in layout and builds.
Where Hexcode Plus helps
We design for compliance, perform pre-compliance checks, prepare technical documentation and coordinate with accredited laboratories. We do not issue certificates; those come from the authorities and recognised labs.
